Later, he was recruited by the coach William Small to play college basketball at Murray State, which transformed him from a little-known college recruit to a potential NBA lottery pick.

College

Payne commenced his freshman years as a point guard as Zay Jackson was on the injured list. During his foremost years, he had an average of 16.8 points, 5.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game.

Cameron Payne | Professional Career

Oklahoma City Thunder

2015–16 season

Oklahoma City Thunder selected Payne in the 2015 NBA draft with the 14th overall pick on June 25. Before entering into NBA, Payne had broken his ring finger; fortunately, it was not a big deal to lead him into surgery.

Following it, his rookie deal only came on July 10 while he debuted for the team on November 1.

His foremost debut was a match against the Denver Nuggets, where he recorded three assists in four minutes, which was an eventual 117–93 win.

On December 5, they signed Payne into the Oklahoma City Blue (the Thunder’s D-League affiliate), calling him back the following day. Similarly, it continued as they reassigned him on December 15, calling him back again the following day.

Cameron featured in another 131–123 win match over the Milwaukee Bucks with a 16-point effort on December 29.

Additionally, Payne had his first career-high on April 12, 2016, with 17 points and seven assists in a 102–98 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

2016–17 season

Prior to the training camp opening, Payne successfully repaired his fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot on July 25, 2016.

Thus, he had good training in his two days; however, he suffered an acute fracture to his fifth metatarsal in the team’s Blue-White Scrimmage. As a result, he had to miss out on the first two months of the season.

Payne returned to the Thunder on January 7 for the first time in the 2016–17 season and made his season debut that night.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Chicago Bulls (2017–2019)

On February 23, 2017, Oklahoma City Thunder traded Payne alongside Joffrey Lauvergne and Anthony Morrow to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott.

Just as in the Thunder, Payne was first affiliated to the Windy City Bulls, the Bulls’ D-League affiliate for the 2016–17 season.

Moving forward, Payne was named the tank commander, and from September 8, 2017, he missed the games for three to four months as he had undergone surgery on his right foot two days prior.

 

Therefore, he made his foremost season debut against the Philadelphia 76ers, which came as a 116–115 loss on February 22, 2018.

Cleveland Cavaliers (2019)

Three days later, on January 6, Payne dealt a 10-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers thus, adding another 10-day on January 16.

During his tenure, he appeared in 9 games for the Cavaliers. As the contract ended, he bid goodbye to the team.

Toronto Raptors (2019)

Toronto Raptors signed Payne on July 15, and he had played for 12 minutes against the Houston Rockets.

Shanxi Loongs (2019–2020)

As Paune joined the Loongs of the Chinese Basketball Association on November 12, 2019, he featured in two games for the team, as he scored 22.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 4.5 steal per contest.

He averaged 23.2 points, 8.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.3 thefts for the Legends. Later, Shaxi loongs replaced him on January 2, 2020.

Texas Legends (2020)
