Juliana Kanyomozi is popularly known as Juliana. She is a Ugandan female musician, actress, businesswoman, an entertainer, celebrated and one of the best musicians’ in East Africa.

Kanyomozi is a multiple award-winning Ugandan pop musician, an R&B and Afro Beat Singer. A musician with adorable vocals, she was once rated one of the most beautiful Ugandan woman of all times by the Big Eye Magazine in 2013.

Juliana Kanyomozi Early life and Education

Juliana Kanyomozi was born on 27 November 1981, in Toro Fort Portal in Western Uganda. She’s a cousin to King Oyo Rukidi IV of Toro Kingdom. Kanyomozi’s father and King Oyo’s father are biological brothers and that she is a princess of the Toro Kingdom as well.

She comes from a family of six, 2 girls and 4 boys, unfortunately, one of her brothers David passed away some time back, and one of her sisters is actress Laura Kahunde. Juliana is a Mutooro by tribe and the 2nd last born in the family.

Her father was a drummer and her grandmother was a vocalist, this clearly states that she inherited her talent from her grandmother.

Juliana grew up in a normal family with loving parents, her parents were always around, her mum was a stay home mother while dad went to work, and they could take them to church on Sundays because it was a God-fearing family.

Kanyomozi attended City Primary School current Arya Primary School for her primary school after she joined Bugema Secondary School for her O-Level education and then Namasagali College in Kamuli District for her A-Level class.

Juliana Kanyomozi is one of the most gifted East African vocalists; she rose to fame in the late 1990s as one half of the all-girl duo I-Jay, with Iryn Namubiru. The group’s single titled Vive La Vie was a popular record on Ugandan radio stations at that time.

After the duo disbanded, Juliana Kanyomozi launched a solo career. She started singing professionally in the late 1990s when she was part of the millennium song that featured so many other Ugandan artists.

She started her music in the late 1990s as a karaoke singer at Hope Mukasa’s Sabrina’s pub. She then started to record her music mainly English songs. Juliana later switched from English to Luganda and her real stardom started the day she began recording Luganda songs.

Her breakthrough songs were two collaborations with Ghetto President current Kyadondo East legislator and aspiring presidential candidate Hon Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine titled Maama Wa Baana Ya Ani and Maama Mbiire.

She recorded her first song and that time she used to perform at Sabrina’s back then in 2000. Her first album was Nabikoowa which was released in 2005 and the second Kanyimbe which was released in 2007.

In 2008, she made history as the first female artist to win the PAM Awards, Artiste of the Year accolade beating competition from Bobi Wine, Bebe Cool and Jose Chameleone.

Juliana’s inspiration is Moses Matovu, given all the knowledge, experience, success and respect he has earned, he is the most humble human being she has ever met.

“when i met him to record ‘guttuke’ i didn’t know what to say to him or how to say it. and then he made it so easy with his humility. he does not look down on people. he’s a great example for us.”

Juliana in her music journey has worked with some of the most talented people in the country, for example, Silver Kyagulanyi who wrote some of her songs, very talented songwriter called Oscar Muwonge also wrote some.

She worked with several talented producers like Steve Jean from Fenon Records, Henry Kiwuwa from No-End Entertainment, Ayde and Pato from Good-Enuff and Travis Kazibwe from Khan Records.

Juliana Kanyomozi was among the judges’ panel at Tusker Project Fame (TPF), an East African talent show and the leading singing competition in the region, from 2009 to 2013. She was also one of the selected African musicians to represent in Coke Studio Africa.

Her judging skills have been extremely appreciated by fans in the region.

She is the soft-spoken judge, full of smiles and kind remarks to the contestants on the popular Tusker Project Fame (TPF) Show. She is one of the very few female musicians who can compete favourably with Uganda’s top male musicians. She is adored across East Africa.

Her role as a judge on TPF evoked mixed reactions from the public. While some thought she was well suited for the position, others wondered if other than singing, she had any other qualification that made her eligible for the role.

Of all the negative and positive comments, Kanyomozi says, “In the first season, I had a lot of negativity around me but I never at any point took it seriously because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some only knew me as a singer, so this had to grow on them, but I have been able to prove myself with God’s blessings.”

Juliana’s experience as a TPF Judge

Juliana says her character as the judge was not planned either did she favour anyone; she only stood in the contestant’s position.

“it was a beautiful experience that availed me with the opportunity to meet a lot of people, widen my fan base and have the chance to guide talented people to the right path. i neither had favourites, nor did the judges plan on whom to say what, or comment in a particular way. we never knew what the contestants were going to sing and perform because the comments had to come naturally. i would try as hard to put myself in the contestants’ shoes and even when one made an annoying mistake, i tried to comment softly, in a sensitive way, because i aimed to guide them to the right path, not put them down.”

While in March 2014, she signed with international cosmetics company Oriflame to be one of their East African brand ambassadors together with lady JayDee of Tanzania and Jamila Mbugua of Kenya.

In the year 2008, Kanyomozi made her film debut in Henry Ssali’s Kiwani: a Ugandan crime thriller film, The Movie alongside Flavia Tumusiime, Hanington Bugingo and Allan Tumusiime.

Still, in the same year, she won the Airtel Women of Substance Award in the category of Music Category.

Again in 2014, Kanyomozi won an Award as the Best Female Afro-Beat Song-Eddiba, in the HiPipo Music Awards. including Warid Women of Substance Award in the Entertainment Awards.

In 2013, Kanyomozi won the Warid Women of Substance Award in the category Entertainment Award.

And still, in the same year, Kanyomozi won the Kora Awards in the category of the Best Female Artist East Africa “I Am Ugandan”.

And again in the same year, she won the Super Talent Awards, Uganda in the category of Most Gifted Artist, including the BEFFTA Awards, the UK in the category of Best International Afrobeats Act.

In 2012, Kanyomozi won the HiPipo Charts Award as the Best Afro Beat Act – “Sanyu Lyange” and the HiPipo Charts Award in the Best Video Act – “Sanyu Lyange” category.

In 2011, Kanyomozi won the East African Music Awards in the category of Best Female Artist – “Alive Again”.

In the same year again she won the Diva Music Award Uganda in the category of Afrobeat Diva – “Sanyu Lyange”.

In 2010, Kanyomozi received an Award in the 2010 Tanzania Music Awards, in the category of Best East African Song – “Haturudi Nyuma” with Kidum.
