Stephan Lichtsteiner: Early Career & Life
Stephan was born on 16 January 1984 in a beautiful place in Adligenswil, Switzerland. He is the son of proud parents, Reto Lichtsteiner and Romy Lichtsteiner.
Not much know about his childhood days; he grew up creating beautiful memories with his parents and brother Marco Lichtsteiner.
The seven-time Scudetto winner left home when he was a teenager to pursue his football career.
Lichtsteiner joined the Grasshopper Zurich youth academy to learn and practice football. Having impressed in his first season with the academy, the Swiss captain earned a spot in the first team the following year.
Stephan Lichtsteiner: Career & Stats
Lichtsteiner started his professional career with Grasshopper Zurich after graduating from their academy. But he made only one appearance for the senior team that season.
The following season was completely opposite because not only did he establish himself as a first-team regular, but the Swiss national team captain also helped the team win the Nationalliga A (now the Swiss Super League).
Becoming a regular starter at just 17 years old for the Swiss champions was enough to convince Lille OSC to secure his services. Staying true to his form, Stephan helped his new team secure a coveted Champions League spot.
Lichtsteiner stayed at the club for a further three years before, during which he made 89 appearances scoring five goals and assisting four times.
Now was the perfect time to take the next step in the Augsburg defender’s journey. That next step was Italian giants Lazio.
Lazio was on another level with all due respect to the previous clubs that the right-back played for. Back in time, legends like Juan Sebastian Veron, Alessandro Nesta, Paul Gascoigne, Christian Vieri, etc., had played for the club.
Although Everton and Paris Saint-Germain wanted the right-back, he made up his mind to move to the Italian giants. Therefore, when Lazio wanted Stephan, he joined the legendary club without any hesitation.
His first season at Lazio was nothing short of extraordinary. The Swiss right-back formed a formidable partnership with Alexander Kolarov, who played as left-back.
Even though Lazio managed tenth in Serie A, they more than made it up by winning the Copa Italia. Consequently, they earned a place in next year’s UEFA Europa League.
The Switzerland national team captain remained with the club for another three years before joining the club, where he made himself one of the best right-backs in the world.
Subsequently, in the summer of 2011, Lichtsteiner confirmed that he would be joining Juventus for €10 million from Lazio.
As a sign of things to come, Lichsteiner scored on his debut. Also, it is the first-ever goal scored at the brand new Juventus stadium.
Continuing his trend, Stephan won the Scudetto in his first season with the club. Also, the Augsburg right-back played a vital role, missing only a handful of matches.
During his seven-year stay with the Turin-based club, Lichtsteiner unbelievably won the Scudetto every year. The Swiss national team captain was also featured in two Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017.
But unfortunately, Juventus lost both the finals despite the seven-time scudetto winner’s efforts. However, the Old Lady did manage to win the Copa Italia four times, along with three Supercoppa Italiana.
Lichtsteiner played a significant role in winning each of those trophies with his endless energetic runs down the right flank, along with his stamina and athleticism.
As a result, the groundsman of Juventus once said that Stephan was a nightmare to work with. It was because Lichtsteiner ruined the right side of the ground due to his robust style of play. Subsequently, he earned the nickname “Forrest Gump.”
By the time of his departure from the club, the Switzerland international had made a grand total of 257 appearances for the Italian giants. He scored 15 goals and provided 27 assists for his teammates.
As a show of acknowledgment for his contributions to the club, Juventus gave Lichtsteiner a hero’s departure. He had the opportunity to take a penalty in his final game for the club. But unfortunately, he missed it.
Nonetheless, the Turin-based club gave him one of the greatest send-offs a player could ever receive.
Juventus took him off even though they had already made all of their substitutions so that Stephan could receive one final standing ovation.
Arsenal & Augsburg Journey
Every child dreams of playing in the Premier League, a league that most of us have grown up watching. Hence, no one was surprised when the decorated 37-year-old decided to move to North London on a free transfer.
During his only season for the Gunners, Lichtsteiner made a total of 23 appearances scoring one goal and assisting another one. The most memorable moment of his time with Arsenal was reaching the Europa League final.
Even though he did not feature in the final, Stephan’s experience of playing in high stake finals helped out a lot. But his calming presence was not enough as the team lost 4-1 to their London rivals Chelsea.
Even though the seven-time Scudetto winner is 37 years old at the moment, he still has the desire and heart to play at the highest level.
As a result, he moved to FC Augsburg in 2019 to find more playing time. Something he had been deprived of lately.
So, when FC Augsburg showed interest in the Swiss captain, he signed for the free transfer club. At the time of writing, Lichtsteiner has made 16 appearances for the German club, providing a solitary assist.
After scoring a 1-1 home draw against 1. FC Union Berlin became the club’s oldest player at 36 years and six months. Unfortunately, on August 2020, the FC Augsburg player announced his retirement from his career.
Stephan’s international career is not as trophy-laden as his club career, mainly due to his national team’s lack of quality. Nonetheless, the Augsburg defender has had some memorable moments with Switzerland.
Lichtsteiner made his debut for his national side on 11 November 2006 during a 2-1 loss to Brazil. Unfortunately, he could not cement his place in the team, which got him excluded from the 2006 World Cup.
However, the right-back is a fighter and has been his whole life. Therefore, Stephan took the negative and made it into a positive by pushing himself.
Eventually, the Swiss captain managed to stamp down a place in the starting 11. At the time, the manager of Switzerland, Kobi Kuhn, named him in the squad for Euro 2008.
Since then, Lichtsteiner has cemented the spot by playing at every major tournament Switzerland has qualified. Most notably, the robust right-back played in every minute of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, highlighting his importance.
But the proudest moment of his professional career came before the UEFA Euro 2016 when the Switzerland FA chose him as the national team captain. To emphasize, there can be no greater honor than captaining your country.
Only a handful of people get the chance to lead their nation, and Lichtsteiner took the opportunity with both hands as he led his team to the round of 16 in UEFA Euro 2016.
Furthermore, the Augsburg right-back captained his side at the 2018 World Cup, playing in every game. He reached a personal milestone in his international career as Stephan became the fourth Swiss to earn 100 international caps.
To date, the Augsburg defender has appeared an astronomical 105 times for his country. In that time, he scored a total of eight times and assisted seven.
At the moment, Lichtsteiner is still captaining his national side, which has managed to secure a spot in next year’s UEFA Euro 2020. It will be the third time that Lichtsteiner will lead his nation into a major tournament.
Let’s hope for Forrest Gump’s sake that Switzerland manages to reach the final and even win it. However, footballing giants like England, Spain, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, etc., will be waiting for them.
Stephan Lichtsteiner: Net Worth & Salary
The seven-time Scudetto winner’s net worth is $21 million. It is because his net worth is unknown to the general public. A considerable chunk has come from Stephan’s 2o year-long professional career.
In his first season with Juventus, Lichtsteiner was earning €1.7 million per year. But because of a lack of information, I could not find out his earnings during the latter stages of his Juve career.
However, he signed a one-year £90,000 per week deal with the Gunners in 2019. Currently, the Swiss captain is earning €29,000 per week, which is a respectable amount for a Stephan defender.
The Augsburg defender has been endorsed by the Puma brand since his Juventus days and continues to do so. The contract details remain undisclosed; however, I believe that the seven-time Scudetto winner is earning a considerable sum of money.
Stephan has played for several clubs during his 20-year-long career. Firstly, he started with Grasshoppers CZ. After his four years of stay at the club, he earned a move to Lille for $1.54 million.
Furthermore, the Swiss captain signed for Lazio in a $5.5 million deal highlighting his growth as a footballer. After that, Lichtsteiner moved to Juventus for $11 million in 2011. Subsequently, he moved to Arsenal and Augsburg on a free transfer.
Stephan Lichtsteiner: Family & Lifestyle
The Switzerland right-back is married to the beautiful Manuela Markworth Namoi Lichtsteiner, a fitness instructor and an economist. The two lovebirds got married in 2010.
Subsequently, the couple welcomed their first child, Kim Naomi Lichtsteiner, in 2011 and, in 2013, fathered their second child, Noe Fabio Lichtsteiner.
The Augsburg defender is very humble and down to earth and spends most of his free time with his wife and kids. Also, the Lichtsteiner family is pleased and blessed, as suggested by his social media posts.
The family is often on vacation, with the most recent one being in the beautiful city of Augsburg in Germany. My best wishes are to Stephan and his family. I hope that they continue to stay prosperous and loving.
