Early Life & Family

was born on October 14, 1986, in San Antonio, Texas, U.S. His father’s name is Wesley Matthews Sr., and his mother’s name is Pam Moore.

Wesley’s recollection of the “Showtime” Lakers is as hazy as his childhood memories of his father.

He wasn’t even two years old when his father, Magic Johnson’s scrawny 6-1 backup point guard, won his second championship ring.

When his parents separated in 1989, he was only three years old, and his father left to play basketball in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, and the Philippines for the next eight years, leaving Pam to raise Wesley alone.

The player feels deeply indebted to his mother. Pam was a single mother who worked three jobs to provide him with things he didn’t need. The player says that a single job would have sufficed to give him shelter, food, and clothing.

However, his mother went above and beyond. The two were close, always pressed together. Wesley says that his mother tried her hardest to be both mother and father.

Sporting Family

We can say that the athletic genes run in Wesley’s family. Read below to learn about Wesley’s family, also basketball champions.

Wesley Matthews’ father

The player’s father is also a former NBA player. In 1977, his father graduated from Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

He was a 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) point guard at the University of Wisconsin–Madison when the Washington Bullets selected him with the 14th pick in the 1980 NBA draft.

Matthew’s father spent nine seasons in the NBA, spending time with the Bullets, Atlanta Hawks (twice), Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, and Los Angeles Lakers.

Matthews Sr. also played in the United States Basketball League, the Continental Basketball Association. Likewise, he also played in Italy, where he spent the 1989–90 season with Ranger Varese before being called up by the Hawks for one regular-season game.

He played in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), winning the best import award for Ginebra San Miguel in 1991. Matthews Sr. announced his retirement from professional basketball in 1996.

Weasley Matthews’ sister

Angela Rodriguez, Matthews’ sister, is also a basketball player. She is a 173cm US/Mexico Combo Guard who graduated from the Milwaukee Panthers and has European experience, having played in Poland and Germany.

Likewise, Angela is a member of the Mexican National Team. She has also played professionally in Iceland, Poland, Romania, Spain, and GWBAA.

Moreover, she was named to the College Sports Madness Horizon League Preseason All-Conference Team and the Preseason All-Horizon League First Team.

Weasley Matthews’ mother

Pam was also a standout basketball player, scoring 50 points and grabbing 50 rebounds in a game at Madison Memorial High School.

She later attended the University of Wisconsin, where she was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder as a freshman in 1977-78.

She was also an All-American 400-meter runner who was recently inducted into the Wisconsin Hall of Fame. However, her love for basketball still stood out.

College Career

Despite being pressured to play for the University of Wisconsin–Madison like his father, Matthews chose to attend Marquette University.

The player was the tallest of Marquette’s “three amigos,” the three guards who started the game. Dominic James, Jerel McNeal, and Matthews began to nearly every game together from their first year on.

Due to his lack of height during the 2008–09 season at Marquette, Wesley learned to play against bigger opponents. He also became one of the nation’s most dominant players driving to the basket.

On December 28, 2005, he had 13 rebounds in Marquette’s 48-point win over Division II opponent Lewis Flyers. Likewise, the player scored a career-high 30 points against the Tennessee Volunteers on December 16, 2008, making 15 of 18 free throws.

Moreover, Wesley set a school record for field goal accuracy (minimum ten attempts) on January 7, 2009, when the player went 10-for-10 en route to 23 points in an 81–76 win over Rutgers.

Wesley Matthews as “Mama’s Boy”

As much as people want to attribute his success to his father’s, Matthews is quick to correct anyone who wants to write his story as a story of an NBA player’s son who followed in his father’s footsteps.

Matthews doesn’t hold a grudge against his father, with whom he has begun to develop a relationship in recent years. However, the player says that such a story would be a lie and ignore the real reason he’s in the NBA.

Wesley didn’t pick up a basketball and start playing because he wanted to be like his father; he did it because he wanted to be like his mother.

The player’s mother, Pam, always made time to play basketball with her son using the hoop she had set up outside their house.

They’d play one-on-one and go through drills, but Pam wouldn’t just pat her son on the back like other mothers. She’d also play the absent father’s role and get physical with him.

Because Wesley spent so much time with his mother as a child, his classmates teased him and referred to him as a “mama’s boy,” a nickname he despised then but has come to accept now.

He’s embraced his mother so much that when he turned 18, he got a tattoo of her initials. The player’s left biceps reads “Dynamic Duo” in cursive over a basketball, with his initials, “WM,” and his mother’s initials, “PM.”
